Defining the Select Minority

In his 1930 work The Revolt of the Masses, José Ortega y Gasset contrasted the complacent "mass man" with the "select minority" (Spanish: minoría selecta). Ortega was careful to clarify that this "minority" is not defined by noble birth, wealth, or political power. It is not an aristocracy of social class, but rather an aristocracy of the spirit. Members of the select minority can be found in any walk of life—they are the scientists, craftsmen, artists, teachers, and citizens who refuse to settle for mediocrity.

The Ethics of Self-Demand

The defining characteristic of the select minority is "self-demand" (exigirse más que a los demás). While the mass man is perfectly satisfied with himself as he is, the select minority individual lives in a state of perpetual striving. They hold themselves to high ethical, intellectual, and professional standards, viewing their lives not as a series of rights to be claimed, but as a series of obligations to be fulfilled. For the select minority, life is a task of continuous self-improvement and service to a higher standard of excellence.

The Role of the Select Minority in Society

Ortega argued that the select minority is essential for the survival of civilization. They are the ones who perform the difficult, specialized work required to maintain scientific progress, legal justice, and cultural depth. Without the leadership and rigorous standards of the select minority, society loses its direction, institutions decay, and culture devolves into a state of primitive conformity. Protecting and encouraging this minority is therefore vital for preventing the rise of militant mediocrity.

This analysis is based on the Philosopheasy article "Why Mediocrity Is Becoming Militant".
