The Will (Schopenhauer's Definition)

In the philosophy of Arthur Schopenhauer, the "Will" (specifically the Will to Live) is the blind, irrational, and ceaseless cosmic force that drives all existence, manifesting in humans as an endless stream of desires that inevitably cause suffering.

The Will (German: Wille) is the central concept in the metaphysical system of Arthur Schopenhauer, most famously detailed in his magnum opus, The World as Will and Representation. Schopenhauer argued that while the world appears to us as "representation" (the physical objects and phenomena we perceive), its underlying, ultimate reality is the Will.

Unlike the traditional philosophical view of a rational universe, Schopenhauer's Will is entirely blind, aimless, and irrational. It is a ceaseless striving that has no ultimate goal or satisfaction. In human beings, the Will manifests as our basic drives, instincts, and endless desires. Because the Will is constantly striving, we are trapped in a cycle of suffering: we experience pain when we desire something we do not have, and we experience fleeting boredom once that desire is temporarily satisfied.

In the context of the Hedgehog Dilemma, the Will is the force that drives individuals to seek warmth and connection. However, because each person is an individual manifestation of this same selfish, striving Will, their attempts to get close inevitably result in conflict and pain. The clash of two Wills is what Schopenhauer refers to as the "prickles" that force us to keep our distance.
