If we can manipulate an unobservable entity to build a device (such as using electrons in a scanning tunneling microscope), can we really claim that the entity is merely a "useful fiction"? This debate is not merely academic; it shapes how we interpret the boundaries of human knowledge and the ultimate authority of scientific institutions.
