The Origin of the Demon
René Descartes introduced the Evil Demon hypothesis in the First Meditation of his seminal work, Meditations on First Philosophy. Having resolved to rid himself of all opinions he had previously held, Descartes sought a tool that would prevent him from falling back into his old habits of belief. The Evil Demon serves as this ultimate psychological and philosophical tool.
The Scope of Deception
The power of the Evil Demon is absolute within the thought experiment. Descartes asks us to imagine that this entity is not only omnipotent but also deeply malicious. The demon manipulates our minds so that everything we perceive—the colors we see, the sounds we hear, the texture of the ground beneath our feet—is a complete fabrication. Furthermore, the demon can corrupt our rational processes, making us believe that basic mathematical equations are true when they might not be. By raising the stakes of skepticism to this extreme level, Descartes ensures that any belief surviving this test is genuinely indubitable.

The purpose of the Evil Demon is not to argue that such an entity actually exists. Rather, it is a methodological device. Descartes wanted to find a foundation for scientific and philosophical knowledge that was completely immune to skepticism. If a truth could be found that even an all-powerful, deceptive demon could not make us doubt, that truth would be the perfect, unshakable foundation for all human knowledge.
