The Antidote to the Mass Man
In his critique of modern society, José Ortega y Gasset did not advocate for a return to traditional aristocratic rule or the disenfranchisement of the public. Instead, he argued that the solution to the rise of the "mass man" and the spread of militant mediocrity is ethical and psychological. To combat the cultural drift toward conformity and intellectual laziness, individuals must consciously choose to live as part of the "select minority"—a group defined not by wealth or social status, but by their commitment to self-improvement and responsibility.
Four Strategies for Cultivating Excellence
Ortega's philosophy suggests several practical ways to resist the pull of collective mediocrity in our daily lives:
1. Embrace Self-Demand
The mass man is content to drift, accepting himself exactly as he is. To resist this, we must practice "self-demand" (exigirse más)—consciously choosing a life of effort and striving for excellence in our chosen fields. This means setting high standards for our work, our relationships, and our personal conduct, even when no one else is watching or demanding it of us.
2. Cultivate Intellectual Humility
Militant mediocrity is characterized by intellectual arrogance—the belief that one's unexamined opinions are automatically valid. Combating this requires us to recognize the limits of our own knowledge. We must remain open to expertise, seek out diverse and challenging perspectives, and commit to rigorous, continuous learning rather than settling for comfortable echo chambers.
3. Value Obligations Over Rights
While modern society heavily emphasizes individual rights, Ortega reminded us that these rights are built upon a foundation of duties and sacrifices. To combat the entitlement of the mass man, we must shift our focus toward our obligations—to our families, our communities, our professions, and the preservation of civilization itself. True freedom is realized through the voluntary acceptance of responsibility.
4. Protect Spaces for Excellence
We must actively support and defend institutions, conversations, and individuals that champion critical thinking, nuanced debate, and the pursuit of mastery. This means resisting the urge to simplify complex issues, refusing to participate in the public shaming of dissenting voices, and celebrating genuine achievement and expertise wherever they are found.

Ultimately, the battle against militant mediocrity is not fought on a physical battlefield, but within the human mind. It is a daily choice to reject the comfortable path of least resistance and instead choose a life of depth, rigor, and purpose. By cultivating the select minority within ourselves, we help preserve the fragile foundations of a free and flourishing civilization.
